From 2023, SEUM Law (“SEUM”) has adopted a new employee benefit program titled “Workation”. “Workation” is a compound word made up of “work” and “vacation”. It signifies a new work system in which work and vacation can take place at the same time.

Given that the key goals for the implementation of the “Workation” program is to refresh from the stress of everyday routine, maximize work productivity, gain insight, and achieve a balance between work and life, it was natural that Jeju Island was chosen as the first venue of the “Workation” program. The program allows firm’s members to work hard and enjoy vacation at the same time by living and working for one month in Jeju – the most popular tourist destination in Korea.

Sungbum Park, associate at SEUM, was the first participants in SEUM’s “Workation” program in January 2023. He reflected on the program as follows:

"As a second-year associate, I think the Workation program is truly special. When you are working late hours in the office, stress compounds and there is little time to look around you and reflect on your everyday life. I was able to learn how to learn from my work in a more enjoyable fashion through this Workation program. It truly is a special opportunity which has allowed me to think deeply about how I can grow and mature as an attorney, in a location different from Seoul.

The best part about the program is that the location that is available for work is not much different from a fully-fledged office, which allowed me to completely immerse myself with work when high level of concentration was needed. When you need to get some air, you can go up to the roof and gaze at the sea. After work or on weekends, you can visit nearby forests, feeling as if you were truly on vacation. This allows you to get a great and light-hearted start to the week on Mondays."

The main reason behind the introduction of the “Workation” program, which is the first of its kind among law firms in Korea, is to provide new experience and reward for SEUM’s team members, all of whom have exerted their best to achieve the highest level of growth and performance. While the firm already provides a “refresh vacation” to all members at every three years of their service, the firm was convinced that was not sufficient to allow members to reflect on their lives and think deeply on the future of their careers over a long period of time. The firm’s hope is that all of the firm’s members using the “Workation” program will create many new memories by immersing themselves in diverse experiences.

SEUM is constantly thinking about how the firm can continuously inspire its members to excel in their work and how it can maximize the satisfaction of its members. The firm hopes that, with the “Workation” program allowing the team take better care of their bodies and minds, the new program will act as a turning point for the members to provide their best performance, thereby providing our clients with a greater level of satisfaction with our services.
